Tyrone Marshall - Real Salt Lake - coaching

Former MLS center back Tyrone Marshall has departed Real Salt Lakeā€™s coaching staff and joined FC Cincinnatiā€™s academy as U-19 coach, it was announced Thursday.

Marshall originally joined RSLā€™s coaching staff in 2015 after a storied MLS career that included winning two MLS Cups and two Supportersā€™ Shields, as well as three U.S. Open Cups. His time with RSL spanned several head coaches.

ā€œI want to say thank you to Jeff Cassar, Mike Petke and Freddy Juarez for giving me the opportunity to be on their staffs,ā€ Marshall said in a release. ā€œOne of the big reasons I came to Salt Lake City was because I knew there was an opportunity as a young coach to grow within the professional ranks. I also want to say thank you to everyone at RSL that has been a part of my journey in Utah.

ā€œDuring the pandemic, my family moved back to Kentucky to be closer with my wifeā€™s mother.  When the opportunity arose to join them in Kentucky while continuing my coaching progression, we couldnā€™t pass that up. Cincinnati provides me a great opportunity to challenge myself and grow as a coach.ā€

In 337 MLS games, Marshall recorded 18 goals and 21 assists across stops with five different clubs from 1998 to 2012: the Colorado Rapids, Miami Fusion, LA Galaxy, Toronto FCand Seattle Sounders. Across 81 caps for Jamaicaā€™s national team, Marshall scored four goals.

ā€œWe want to thank Tyrone from the bottom of our hearts. He has been a big part of our success at Real Salt Lake during his tenure,ā€ Juarez said in a release. ā€œAs someone who aspires to be a head coach, this is a great opportunity for him to continue his progression and stay close to his family. We will be rooting for him and he will always have a place in the RSL family.ā€

Marshall joins an FC Cincinnati side thatā€™s entering their third year in MLS. On the academy front, theyā€™ve signed one true Homegrown Player in goalkeeper Beckham Sunderland.
