Without warning on Monday, a Chris Armas account launched itself into the Twittersphere. It looked legit — but you can never be too careful these days online.
Once the official New York Red Bulls account retweeted Armas' first foray into the app, it confirmed that it really was him and not an imposter. But, the day following a Conference Semifinal first leg loss to Columbus Crew SC, why now?
"It was time to encourage them to come out, get behind us as always, and make some noise in our building where it's tough to play for other teams," Armas said after training Tuesday. "My kids have been bugging me for a while like 'hey, dad, let's get going here.'"
The 46-year-old denied the notion that he needed any help figuring his way around the app.
"I'm not a dinosaur, I understand Twitter and Instagram. I'm just not always in that spotlight," Armas said. "It's important to connect with the fans a little differently."
It appears he'll be a low-volume user. As of Thursday afternoon, he has just two tweets, congratulating Aaron Long for winning 2018 MLS Defender of the Year.
