Atlanta United supporters aim to meet their own lofty bar with MLS Cup tifo

Atlanta United - El Tata tifo

You can bet that Atlanta United's supporters groups will try to outdo their own lofty tifo accomplishments at Saturday night's MLS Cup (8 pm ET | FOX, UniMás, TSN, TVAS).

Just how are they going to do it? Well, as the Atlanta Journal Constituion's Doug Roberson writes, you'll just have to wait and find out.

In a piece chronicling the context and meaning behind Atlanta's brief but impressive tifo history, Roberson's insistent questioning brought only one concrete promise from Terminus Legion president Domer Donaldson.

"It's going to be a good one," he insisted.

"Good" itself is a high bar considering the standard Atlanta supporters have set in the Audi 2018 MLS Cup Playoffs.

The second leg of their conference semifinal at Mercedes-Benz stadium against New York City FC featured a tribute to outgoing manager Tata Martino, shown above. Then in Leg 1 of the Eastern Conference Championship against the New York Red Bulls, nearly everyone in the crowd of more than 70,000 played a role in a stadium-wide tifo display shown below.

Among the other interesting revelations in Roberson's piece? That the budget for such displays â€” at least in one case â€” can go as high as $40,000, and that the planned display for Saturday night will take at least 20 hours of collaborative creation.
