Prior To New York

McCarthy spent two seasons with the LA Galaxy, winning the 2024 MLS Cup. He previously played for Los Angeles FC, Inter Miami CF, Tampa Bay Rowdies, Philadelphia Union, Bethlehem Steel FC, and Rochester Rhinos. At La Salle University, he made 74 appearances, ranking among the program’s top goalkeepers.

Academy Experience

McCarthy developed through the youth ranks with Philadelphia SC and also played for Northeast Catholic High School in Philadelphia before beginning his collegiate career at La Salle University.

Red Bull New York acquired John McCarthy on loan from Los Angeles FC in January 2026.
