TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS:Re-signing
Real Salt Lake announced on Friday they have signed defender Aaron Herrera to a new four-year contract, securing the up-and-coming star's presence in Utah for several seasons to come.
The 22-year-old, a Homegrown signing before the 2018 season, had a breakthrough campaign in 2019, making 32 league appearances as RSL's starting left back, leading the team in minutes played, and was named the club's Defender of the Year.
âIt means a lot to sign with my childhood club. Iâm proud to be playing with my teammates, for the coaching staff and for the fans,â Herrera said in a team release. âItâs a good time for RSL and I feel like we have some unfinished business. I want to stay here and keep pushing this club to the limits with all the guys that are here and try to take this club to a new level.â
The Las Cruces, New Mexico native is a former US U-20 international and could be in the mix for the US U-23s at Olympics qualifying next year.
âAaron is a very good 1-v-1 defender and adds consistency. The team voted him Defensive Player of the Year. That speaks for itself,â RSL head coach Freddy Juarez said. âWeâre always happy with a player that can provide that at a young age. Heâs shown a lot of maturity and quality over the last two years and he helps steady our back line. He has a very high ceiling and weâre going to continue working with him to help him grow.â
RSL will kick off the 2020 MLS regular season Feb. 29 at Orlando City SC.
