Executive Vice President, Sporting and Matchday

Nelson Rodríguez serves as Executive Vice President, Sporting and Matchday at Major League Soccer. In this role, he oversees all aspects of sporting administration – both on and off the field – as well as overall sporting development.

Sporting administration includes overall quality control of Matchday, comprised of competition, player health and performance, safety and security, operations and competition planning, and off field matters including MLS roster and budget rules, and compliance. Sporting development encompasses the professional pathway – MLS NEXT Pro and NEXT – and advancements in the use and application of data, technology, and match-related innovation.

Rodriguez, who played a central role in MLS’ decision to align with the rest of the world’s top leagues by shifting to a fall-to-spring schedule beginning in 2027, also leads efforts in international soccer relations and assists in devising overall strategy for MLS’ sporting product, including competition format, schedule, and associated club tournaments.

Before returning to the league office in 2021, Rodríguez served in executive leadership positions with the Chicago Fire across six years. He originally joined the Fire in September 2015 as General Manager, overseeing all sporting operations, including technical staff management, scouting, player personnel, player development systems, and the Chicago Fire Soccer Academy. In 2018, he took on an expanded role as President and GM, and in 2021, Rodriguez led the club’s transition back to the city of Chicago and enacted a new club-wide strategic plan.

In addition to his time with the Fire, Rodríguez has held a series of senior leadership positions across the soccer landscape. These include Managing Director, National Team Advisory Services, the U.S. Soccer Federation; President, Chivas USA; Executive Vice President, Competition and Game Operations, MLS; Senior Vice President, International Business, Soccer United Marketing; Director of Soccer Operations, New York/New Jersey MetroStars; and Head Coach of men’s soccer at Lafayette College.
