Wednesday night's Leagues Cup 2026 quarterfinal clash at Sports Illustrated Stadium could be Austin FC's biggest match of the year (8:30 pm ET | Apple TV).
Currently 14th in the Western Conference, seven points outside the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs field, the Verde & Black have fallen short in MLS regular-season play. Even still, the opportunity to lift a trophy is squarely on the table.
Who stands in their way? Toluca FC, one of the region's most successful clubs. The current Concacaf Champions Cup title-holders are largely viewed as the favorite to win this competition and add to their impressive trophy case.
But interim head coach Davy Arnaud and his squad aren't letting the moment, or the opposition, overwhelm them.
"It's another game for us. I know we say it's just another game, but we understand that this game means something more, so it's an important game," asserted Arnaud.
"… I don't think there's any hiding that there's more at stake in this game. So we understand it's an important game. But I don't think it'll be hard for us to get up for this game just with what's on the line."
Underdog status
Despite an up-and-down campaign, Austin have made plenty of noise during Leagues Cup. They emerged as one of MLS's top teams during Phase One, finishing second in the MLS table with eight points and no losses.
Yet, Austin enter their quarterfinal matchup as underdogs to Toluca, the top-ranked team in the Leagues Cup 2026 rankings. It's a situation they're familiar with, and one that won't bother them at all.
"The excitement comes from the fact that no one expects anything from us. That's just the reality. I think it's not a factual reality, but that's what the reality is from outside," said defender Brendan Hines-Ike.
"… I think you get to test yourself against different talents, international guys. Toluca's obviously a well-known team now in North America, so it's exciting for the group, but I think also we're very focused on the task at hand."
Against a LIGA MX powerhouse, cohesion and resolve will be paramount if Austin can pull off the upset.
"At this point of the season, it's every player, whether you're playing or not, is bought in," said Hines-Ike. "Some guys are going to travel on this trip; they're not gonna play at all. Some guys are going to play both games. Some guys are going to play a mixture of minutes. Some guys are supporting staff that you may not think are important are going to play just as crucial a role.
"If [people] are not all the way there, then it weighs on the group… It's crucial that everybody's there and is bought in for the guy who's number one all the way down to whoever the bottom guy is."
Leagues Cup launchpad
Leagues Cup has been a pleasant reprieve from the regular day-to-day of the MLS schedule for Austin.
"It's fun. It is, it is nice to look at somebody different… Anytime you play someone outside of your league, especially LIGA MX, I think they're special games, whether you're playing Champions [Cup] or you're playing Leagues Cup or anything else," said Arnaud. "I think everyone – the players, the staff – [think] it's a nice change and they're quality. They're good teams, obviously. So it's fun to prepare for and it's fun to play in."
Hines-Ike emphasized just how the team's progress and style have improved in recent weeks. Nowhere have those successful steps been more apparent than during their Leagues Cup campaign, which included shutout wins over Tijuana and Puebla and a PK victory over Tigres – paced by four goals from Myrto Uzuni.
"We're at a point now where we should be very confident in what we're doing and where we are," said Hines-Ike. "I don't think there was that feeling before Leagues Cup. But I think it's definitely there now."
